REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS OF THE 14th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (JULY 5th, 2020)

Zac.9, 9-10; Psalm 145; Romans 8, 9-13; Matthew 11, 25-30

Bishop +Guy Sansaricq

The readings of the day are very soothing. The first one describes the solemn entry of a great leader who “sits on an ass” unlike great generals who ride on “white horses.”  That leader whom we can identify as Jesus comes into the City to banish war and proclaim peace. Yes, PEACE is Jesus’ message and gift to the world. He teaches that violence, hatred, bloody wars are not the course to take in our pursuit of human progress and fulfillment. Great news!

The 2nd reading draws a sharp contrast between the “flesh and the Spirit.” It tells us that the “followers of the flesh will die” while those “led by the Spirit shall live.” Let us be aware that great misfortunes will strike those –too many- who blindly obey the wild instincts and unruly appetites of the body. Self-control is an essential virtue to acquire. The mastery of the flesh is what opens the way to harmonious relationships and ultimately peace.

Some might believe that the path of Jesus is arduous and unattractive. The closing words of the Gospel text will dispel our fears: “Come to me all you labor and are burdened and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me that I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

When we welcome the Spirit in our lives, the rules of the Lord become a delight! TRY IT!
